Trump to meet Australian PM on 1st presidential trip to NYC

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and U.S. President Donald Trump will meet in NY later on Thursday for their first face-to-face encounter following a testy long distance start to their relationship.

Much of that cost will cover the manpower it will take to close down roads while Trump is traveling around NY. A recent poll shows that Trump still retains strong support among Americans who voted for him. But Politico reports that it doesn't seem as if many NY pols will be showing up, or even meet with the president while he's in town. VOA reporter Tina Trinh has more. But Trump said in an interview last week that he so far has avoided returning to the city of his birth because the trips are expensive for the government and would inconvenience New Yorkers.

Hundreds of NYPD officers have been deployed to secure his appearance, with many more on standby on surrounding blocks. After dinner with Turnbull, Trump leaves for a weekend visit to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

He's expected to arrive at the Wall St. heliport mid-afternoon and then head up the FDR, freezing traffic on the drive before dropping by Trump Tower, which will cause street closures around Midtown.

Yet the president isn't returning for long.

"Part of the reason that the president has not come back is because he knows that New Yorkers are united against his policies", said Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, which is organizing a protest in front of Trump Tower. His wife, Melania, and their 10-year-old son, Barron, who attends a private Manhattan school, have remained behind, as have Trump's two adult sons who are now tasked with running their father's sprawling business interests. That contentious issue got resolved earlier this week when Congress reached a deal to reimburse NY and other cities $61 million to help defray the expenses.

Without New York, we wouldn't have had the same Donald Trump.

A spokesman for Mayor de Blasio, a fierce Trump critic, told the Daily News he "declined an invitation to the event before the President had anything to do with" it. "It does not suggest common ground".

Trump has also caused a financial headache for the city. In the intervening months, he has "threatened to deport our neighbors, take away our healthcare, reject refugees from our shores, and give even more tax breaks to billionaires", one protest's organizers, Resist Here and the Working Families Party, wrote on Facebook.

"It was a new administration, briefings were coming from across the administration and there was a moment when the president expressed less than admiration for an agreement that the previous administration has entered into".

Other demonstrations will take place throughout the city.
