Small Screen: Sexual harassment weighs on Fox News business deal

In a letter to Ofcom, the British regulatory agency looking into the proposed takeover of Sky television by Fox News' parent company, 21st...

The British media regulator, Ofcom, is examining whether it is in the public interest for the Murdoch-owned company to take full ownership of Sky, of which it already owns 39%.

Wendy Walsh, who was once a regular guest on Fox News, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the deal would allow Fox to bring a culture of sexual and racial harassment to the United Kingdom.

A BBC reporter approached him recently in Manhattan after the mogul refused a proper interview, asking if Murdoch is anxious about how the "Fox scandal" might affect his deal to fully acquire European TV giant Sky, or if "what's happening at Fox News" will be bad for future deals.

Rupert Murdoch has said he is "not worried" about Fox News despite allegations of sexual harassment at the broadcaster. However, Murdoch has a point about the network's ratings as FNC finished April as the most-watched channel in all of cable.

When approached in NY by the BBC, Rupert Murdoch said he was not concerned about events at Fox. TNT's NBA-playoff heavy schedule finished second, averaging 1.8 million viewers between 8-11 p.m. MSNBC, HGTV and ESPN round out the top five.

"Nothing's happening at Fox News", Murdoch said.

"It's phone-hacking part two", she added, a reference to the hacking scandal at Murdoch newspapers that derailed the mogul's 2012 attempt to purchase Sky. The scandal revealed close ties between politicians, police and the employees of the paper.

Douglas Wigdor, a New York City lawyer who represents 20 current and former Fox News employees who are suing the network for alleged racial and sexual bias, said last week that he had been invited to meet with Ofcom officials on Thursday.

Instead, Mr Murdoch simply told me that he was "not anxious at all" about what's happening. Bill Shine, who was promoted to co-president after Ailes's departure, parted ways with Fox News just last week, a casualty of excessive proximity to the 20-year excesses of Ailes & Co.

Bloom told reporters there was an "epidemic of sexual harassment and retaliation and allegations of racism rampant inside the Murdoch media empire in the US", which she described as "phone-hacking part two".

That message is that Fox has taken swift and decisive action; that the allegations remain unproven; that there is so much more to Fox than Rupert Murdoch; and that the generational change now under way is harbinger of a very different corporate culture.

The trouble for the company is that, on Thursday, Wigdor is going to spend rather a long time in the inner sanctum of Ofcom providing the kind of detail that can not be good news for the Murdochs' latest bid.

The discussions before Ofcom are occurring amid reports that federal investigators have widened their probe into how Fox News handled the financial reporting of payments made to settle sexual harassment claims.

"Fox News is getting record ratings ... so I'm not anxious at all", he added.

Ofcom will investigate whether Sky's potential new owners are "fit and proper".
