Union: Up to 40K walking off the job at AT&T this weekend

Tens of thousands of members of the Communications Workers of America at AT&T, including about 400 in San Francisco, walked off their jobs Friday, union officials said.

According to the CWA Union, almost 37,000 employees are on a 3-day strike in 36 states.

Among the key issues, according to the union: a wage increase more than the 2 percent being offered by AT&T that will cover increased healthcare costs; a steady commission for AT&T store employees; no increase in healthcare costs until 2021; a ratio of company owned stores to authorized stores vacation; and a different sick day policy.

This weekend's strike comes almost two months after 17,000 AT&T workers in Nevada and California walked off the job. "Despite being the largest telecom company in the country with almost $1 billion a month in profits and the CEO earning $28 million, AT&T continues to pinch its workers' basic needs and stand in the way of high-quality service its customers pay good money for".

During an event at the AT&T call center at The Highlands in April, when Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., announced legislation aimed at protecting communications workers' jobs from outsourcing, CWA Local 2006 President Ann Vogler said recent layoffs, combined with a hiring freeze, were on employees' minds.

CWA members at the store on Venture Drive in Peru picketed, but it was not immediately clear whether any, all or how many employees there were on strike.

"The brief grievance strike has been resolved and employees are returning to work today", an AT&T spokesman told Consumerist at the time. "We're more frustrated than ever with AT+T that they refuse to come to the bargaining table with serious proposals that protect our good jobs".

Last year, CWA members at Verizon were on strike for 49 days, finally gaining a contract with greater job protections and winning 1,300 new call center jobs. "Eastern Time on Friday, workers will be off the job and onto picket lines across the country". I'm a single mother and my son is about to graduate.

Locally, workers have posted reminders about the planned walkout on message boards and social media asking customers to show their support by not shopping at AT&T stores.
