United Airlines settles with man dragged off airplane

The deal includes a confidentiality clause.

United said earlier on Thursday that it would offer passengers who give up their seats up to $10,000. "United just couldn't afford any more bad publicity on this", he said.

Lawyers for Dr. David Dao announced he's reached an "amicable settlement" with United Airlines on Thursday.

Passengers can also get up to $10,000 if they volunteer to take a later flight.

Those and other changes, which the airline called "substantial", are the result of a two-week internal probe of the 9 April video of which went viral. Authorities pulled him from the seat and dragged him down the aisle.

Dao's lawyers previously said he suffered a concussion, broke his nose and lost teeth during the ordeal.

In a phone interview with the Associated Press, Demetrio said the settlement also averts any lawsuit against the city of Chicago.

A struggle ensued between Dao and the officer in the isle of the aircraft. At the time, Demetrio said Munoz's apology was "staged".

Demetrio said it was "unheard of" for a company to admit responsibility so quickly and completely.

Dr. Dao has yet to give his own firsthand account of what happened on April 9 as he tried to make his way home to Louisville, Kentucky, and given the swiftness with which United settled it is likely he never will after likely signing a non-disclosure agreement.

The incident arose from a common air travel issue - a fully booked flight.

"I sincerely hope that all other airlines make similar changes and follow United's lead in helping to improve the passenger flying experience with an emphasis on empathy, patience, respect and dignity", he said.

No one accepted the offer, and United staff then chose four passengers to involuntarily bump. However, Dao, a doctor, said he had patients to see in the morning, and he refused to leave.

The dragging was a major public-relations crisis for United.

Munoz apologized again and faulted his own initial response, in which he defended airline employees and called Dao belligerent. In the videos, Dao appeared catatonic with blood dripping out of his mouth.

City Aviation Department spokeswoman Lauren Huffman did not respond to questions about the United settlement. They receive less training than police officers do and can not carry guns inside the terminals.

Some lawmakers demanded outlawing the practice of overbooking flights, in which airlines sell more seats than are available to ensure a full plane.
