United States may apply laptop ban to Europe, UK flights

Expansion Of U.S. Airplane Laptop Ban Would Discount FAA Concerns About In Flight FiresMore

DHS officials plan to meet with airline industry officials on Thursday (11 May) to discuss security issues, two people briefed on the matter said.

Lapan said the agency said would also "make changes when necessary" to ensure air traveler safety.

It looks like the U.S. is now considering expanding its ban on laptops on commercial airlines to include some European countries, including the United Kingdom, according to reports. Under the new administration, arrivals to the USA are forecast to drop slightly to 84.2 million for the period. Will you be checked at security for devices in correlation to your ticket - as many passengers will pass through the same security area who are not travelling to the US?

When could the announcement come?

A Department of Homeland Security spokesman told Quartz that a final decision on whether to extend the ban to Europe has not been made. Officials are coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration to provide carriers with a bulletin on the proper handling of batteries, DHS spokeswoman Jenny Burke said last month.

A French official with direct knowledge about the meeting said France planned to push back against the measure, saying there was no information to suggest a significant increase in the terror threat.

It was established in response to fears that militants could build a bomb into such electronics, which could pass through the security checks applied to cabin luggage but could be more easily detected by the screening applied to luggage placed in the hold. In some tests, fake explosives hidden in laptops had gotten through security scanners nearly without fail, they said.

Like, really big: The number of flights from Europe to the US - more than 350 a day - make it the world's busiest global traffic corridor.

This surely won't make the USA more inviting. The head of the International Air Transport Association, Alexandre de Juniac, told CNNMoney in March that it wasn't an appropriate solution to the threat, would hurt the airlines affected, and should be overturned.

Following the US announcement in March, Britain implemented a similar measure on flights from six Middle Eastern countries. If one catches fire and explodes, while near other lithium ion batteries they would likely also catch fire.
