10.5 inch IPad Pro Gets Official, Replaces 9.7 Inch Model

Traditionally, WWDC keynotes have been mostly about software, as Apple previews what's coming up and prepares for hardware announcements coming later in the year.

Apple's next major update iOS 11, announced at its developer conference yesterday, will no longer support 32-bit devices and apps, instead it will only operate on 64-bit devices and apps, the firm confirmed. The speaker will use an array of six microphones for voice control via Siri, and seven tweeters for audio playback.

Apple unveiled the high-end iMac Pro for power users at its annual conference for software programmers Monday.

Each year at WWDC Apple announces updates to the iOS platform: in 2016 in introduced iOS 10 that integrated artificial intelligence across Maps, Messages, Photos and other Apple apps.

The Cupertino company described the 7in device, which comes in white and "space grey", as a "breakthrough home speaker" created to "rock the house". This type of contextual awareness will only increase over time as Apple make more updates to iOS 11. Messages will also work with macOS, and they have end-to-end encryption for better digital privacy and security. About 71 percent of them will be using Amazon's Echo speaker, while Google's Home captures about 24 percent of the market. Google Home, which sells for $129, is a window to Google's plethora of services from Search to YouTube Red music streaming and its Calendar app.

The 15-inch model will also feature more powerful discrete graphics options, as well as more video memory. It's also what Microsoft is targeting with the Surface Pro; a new model comes out on June 15. In-app purchases can now be visible on the App Store and searchable, with descriptions and icons showcasing the IAP.

WWDC follows similar events held recently by Facebook and Google.

Virtual reality has been described as the next big thing for decades.

Apple is getting serious about competing with Amazon's and Google's infiltration of the home.

"AI will play a larger role with this release by leveraging enhanced capabilities around Siri", Brian White, a Drexel Hamilton analyst, wrote in a note to clients.

Not much is visible on the placeholder app, except that it requires iOS 11 or higher.

This year, Apple is going to live stream the event.

More than 35 million people in the USA are expected to use a voice-activated speaker at least once a month this year, more than doubling from last year, according the research firm eMarketer. Apple management showed off some of the machine learning features in SiriKit.
