$3.8 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline begins service

$3.8 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline begins service - WXOW News 19 La Crosse, WI – News, Weather and Sports |

Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners announced that the 1,200-mile line carrying North Dakota oil through South Dakota and Iowa to a distribution point in IL had begun commercial service. It carries oil pumped out of the Bakken oil formation in Canada and parts of the northern US plains south to a major pipeline hub, where it can be sent to Gulf Coast refineries. Thereafter the pipeline was routed to pass thru treaty lands of the Oceti Sakowin, also known as the Great Sioux Nation, and within miles of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's primary intake for drinking water, without proper consultation or free, prior and informed consent. Calling themselves the water keepers, protesters noted the potential danger to the Missouri River and its tributaries should the pipeline rupture.

As The Two-Way reported, a federal judge in March denied a motion for a preliminary injunction to stop construction, clearing the way for the completion of the pipeline.

The 1,172-mile (1,885-km) pipeline will carry Bakken crude from North Dakota through the Midwest, which will then be transported through a connecting pipe to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Shares of Energy Transfer Partners were higher during early-morning trading on Thursday.

Late previous year, President Barack Obama refused to approve the pipeline's final connection, under the Missouri, and sent plans back to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for review.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline began shipping oil for customers on Thursday, as Native American tribes that opposed the project vowed to continue fighting. But President Donald Trump, fulfilling campaign promises, quickly reversed Obama's decision after taking office.

In February, the US Army Corps of Engineers granted permission for the last stretch of the pipeline, under Lake Oahe, which had been opposed by Native Americans and environmentalists.

"This pipeline became operational today, yet it has already leaked at least three times".
