4-Way Tie For 1st Place After 2 Rounds of US Open

He made four birdies over the last six holes to salvage a 71, but he still missed the cut for the second straight year.

The world number two hit just five fairways to tie for last in the 156-man field in that category as a record 44 players broke par on day one, surpassing the previous best of 39 at Medinah in 1990.

Rose was also vulnerable at two over, a score that left him one shot outside the cut line with Friday's later starters still to tee off.

The last six majors have crowned first-time champions and that trend looks poised to continue at Erin Hills where you have to look way down the leaderboard to 19th before finding a major victor in U.S. Masters champion Sergio Garcia of Spain.

Also playing in the afternoon was Dustin Johnson, the defending champion and No. 1 player in the world, who opened with a 75.

For the first time since the Official World Golf Ranking began in 1986, Nos.

Leishman is three strokes off the pace, with English pair Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood joined by American duo Brian Harman and Brooks Koepka at the top of the leaderboard on 7-under.

"I'm feeling really, really good about this golf course".

The U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis., headed into the weekend with a four-way tie for the lead.

Speaking about the changes he made previous year, Fleetwood added: "I went back to my old coach and had one of my best mates caddying and I think that can't be underestimated, having your friend with you, whether you're leading the US Open or playing a casual round at home. I feel like that's going to help me to get back into contention and hopefully try to win some of these things".

Tall fescue grass on the fourth, 12th, 14th and 18th holes at Erin Hills was being cut on Tuesday as McIlroy spoke to the media, which caught the 2011 champion by surprise.

The up-and-down round ended with the Englishman signing for one-under 71 and walking into the clubhouse level with Fowler, who had yet to start his round. "To shoot a good round like today, I'm certainly looking forward to the weekend". Besides his much improved putting, Hadwin credits his marriage and a change in attitude for his strong play this year.

The 25-year-old Matsuyama, ranked No. 4 in the world, birdied six of his first eight holes in the second round.

Day added a 75 to his first-round 79, which included two triple-bogeys.

Paul Casey discovered how little it takes to make a big number in the U.S. Open. The golf course is actually really attractive. Unlikely as it seems, that was the last major he played on the weekend. His third shot went over the back of the green, and it took him five shots from there, including a chip that rolled back to his feet.

"I've been very light on competitive rounds", McIlroy said. "Part of that is just age and part I'll give credit to Johnny McLaren (his caddie), credit to my wife and my little boy".

Johnson, who arrived late at Erin Hills following the birth of his second child on Monday, will now have extra time to spend with his infant son after returning a 73 for four-over.

Rickie Fowler, Jamie Lovemark and J.B. Holmes were all one shot back, followed by a group of five at 5 under, including amateur Cameron Champ.

"Not your typical U.S. Open setup, but I'm a big fan", McIlroy said.
