Andre Ward stops Sergey Kovalev to win light heavy rematch

The fight, a scheduled 12-rounder that headlined an HBO pay-per-view telecast in the US, was a rematch of their November 2016 fight, which Ward won by a controversial decision.

With another close round taking place in the 8th round, Ward uncorked a hellacious right hand that clearly took Kovalev's legs from underneath him.

Andre Ward says he's determined to beat Sergey Kovalev during their rematch tonight (June 17), after Kovalev circulated a racist meme on social media.

"He's a great fighter, not a lot of people are going to beat him", Ward said. "I could tell he was reacting to my body shots and I knew I had him then".

On Saturday night he was on one knee as referee Tony Weeks waved his hands in adjournment, and Ward kept the three light-heavyweight championships he took from Kovalev last November.

"It was a low blow, again another one", said Kovalev.

"Why stop the fight?" he said. "I believe he can outbox Anthony Joshua". He suggested Ward should face Anthony Joshua, the six foot six, 250lbs noted power puncher and unified IBF and WBA world champion. I got exhausted, but I still wanted to fight. Ward said in pre-fight interviews that he hopes to score a more conclusive win this time around and put to bed any lingering doubts about who is the better fighter. Ward has not fought outside of the 50 United States since June 2008 and has fought just two fights in his career that weren't on USA soil.

Agnew, who had only previously lost to Sergey Kovalev and Samuel Clarkson, went into survival mode and somehow made it through the next two sessions only for the referee to spare him more punishment midway through the fourth.

"I looked back at the fight and I thought, dude, you just gave away some rounds".

That seems highly unlikely with there being zero incentive for Ward to take a third fight and particularly given the well-documented hostility between the two camps. Between exchanges, Ward used his lead hand to control distance, while on the inside he smothered much of Kovalev's offense.

"Low blow, again, low blow".

There was at least one low blow in the eighth - the first that started the final sequence - and potentially two others. "I didn't feel he could throw the punch that would end the fight". Drakulich ruled it a knockout, and state commission officials huddled before they supported the ref's decision, instead of giving Rigondeaux a no contest or even disqualifying him. "I think that would be a very interesting fight", Hunter said. Kovalev doubled over in an effort to sway Weeks into calling a halt for illegal punches, but the veteran third man deemed them legal and chose to waive off the fight, much to Kovalev's dismay.
