Apple App Store update moves tipping to in-app purchase territory

The app review prompts may seem to be a smaller issue but these are annoying things faced by smartphone and tablet users after every few days.

We've all been there; you download an app, use it regularly, and find yourself frequently prompted to write an App Store review.

App Store policy has been updated to mandate use of Apple's standardized rating API going forward, disallowing custom review prompts.

Pepe the Frog is reportedly banned from the Apple App Store. Instead, there'll be two key restrictions that should reduce headaches for everyone: First, apps will be required to use a new Apple-made review prompt, which allows users to leave a rating without exiting an app. The changes were first spotted by 9to5Mac.

Now, it's worth noting noting that some of the incentive for developers to constantly prompt for reviews has been taken away.

Each app will only be allowed to prompt you three times a year in this way as well. And if a user leaves a rating, that user won't receive another prompt for at least a year - and only if a new version of the app has been released. And, it will be possible to disable these review prompts entirely starting in iOS 11.

Google is known to have a less stringent app review policy than Apple, which often takes a week or more to approve new app submissions.

One developer has been able to gross more than 50,000 downloads for one of their iOS apps, notching tenth place on the App Store's productivity board, while making $80,000 per month. Now the entire control of app review prompts is in the user's hand.
