Bill Cosby's sexual assault case ends in mistrial

'She's entitled to a verdict in this case, ' Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said at a news conference. "We will take a hard look at everything involved and then we will retry it", Steele said at a news conference.

Cosby's team declared victory, however temporary.

Despite the many allegations, Cosby was on trial for the alleged assault of just one woman: Andrea Constand, a former Temple University basketball coach who accused Cosby of drugging and assaulting her at his home in 2004. She said: "Try him again".

"It's simply inappropriate at this time", O'Neill said.

Cosby's lawyer said Saturday that the comedian "began this trial presumed innocent and he leaves it that way".

The judge in the Bill Cosby trial declared a mistrial Saturday after the jury failed to reach a verdict in the case.

Levenson believes the breakdown of the first Cosby jury is important to know, but perhaps not predictive of how the second trial might go. She also called the prosecutor "heinously and exploitively ambitious".

The statement also sharply criticised the judge and prosecutors for pursuing the case.

"How do I describe the counsels for the accusers?" The district attorney at the time declined to press charges, citing insufficient evidence. "It has been restored".

He co-starred in the 1960s espionage show "I Spy", the first black performer to star in a weekly American TV dramatic series. He also found success with his "Fat Albert" animated TV show and starred in commercials for Jell-O pudding.

Constand told prosecutor Kristen Feden she was unable to stop the sex attack because her body was "limp" - the result, she claimed, of the unidentified pills Cosby suggested she take to help her "relax".

He added that jurors should be proud of how they handled the case even though they could not reach a unanimous verdict. O'Neill instructed them to keep working toward a unanimous decision.

But the panel returned yesterday to tell the judge they were still deadlocked on all three counts.

The judge sought to comfort the jurors, at least one of whom fought back tears, calling their epic deliberation "one of the more courageous acts, one of the more selfless acts that I've seen in the justice system".

"Do you agree there is a hopeless deadlock that can not be resolved by further deliberations?" he asked each juror. "T he prosecution needed 12 for a verdict - the defense only needed one for a mistrial".

It wasn't immediately known how many jurors wanted to convict and how many wanted to acquit. Cosby's trial ended without a verdict. "Once people say they are deadlocked, then what really becomes the reason for further deliberations?" Cosby pleaded not guilty to the charges.

"How do I describe the district attorney?" Cosby was charged shortly before the statute of limitations was set to expire.

Callan said the $33.5 million awarded in the case reflected the jury's reaction to a double homicide and was larger than a potential award to someone who has civil claims against Cosby.

"My opinion continues to be that Ms. Constand was probably the victim of a sexual assault", said Castor, whom Constand is suing for defamation.

And so a trial that was probably the biggest celebrity prosecution since the murder trial of O.J. Simpson in 1995 has ended without a final outcome.
