Bulls trade Butler to Timberwolves

Jimmy Butler

Butler's trade to Minnesota comes after a strain of rumors emerged involving other teams who were said to be highly interested in taking the guard/forward player in - one of them was this year's runner-up, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"It's been something that over a prolonged period of time there have been different moments where he's had to consider it and think about it", Butler's agent, Bernie Lee, told The Associated Press. The duo spent four seasons together in Chicago before Thibodeau was sacked by the Bulls in 2015.

Thibodeau still remembers his early impressions of Butler after the Bulls drafted the Marquette product in 2011. You've embraced me like a son and pushed me to get better every day, every season. But I know I owe so much to the person I am now, and to the player that I've become, to you. I know the things that are important to him.

Whatever they want to call me ... face ...

The biggest wins over the next few seasons will have to come off the court - in practice sessions and player development, in impact rookies and roster building. They barely made the playoffs and picked No. 16 overall. It's going to be the little things and the incremental things we hope to see along the way. And Thibodeau addressed the losses of Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn, whom the Bulls acquired along with the draft rights to Lauri Markkanen. They were among the youngest teams in the league last season, cast as a team that could be a force once all of their pups grew up. Point guard Derrick Rose was also traded away by the team after the 2015-16 season, and the organization's handling of his departure was also met with criticism.

The Timberwolves have already made one blockbuster move, acquiring Jimmy Butler in a trade with the Chicago Bulls on Thursday during the National Basketball Association draft. The two strong-willed workaholics clashed on occasion during their time together and Butler said during the Olympics in Rio last summer that it was a "love-hate" relationship.

However, while a player like #Michael Jordan was also the face of the Bulls at one time, they never considered trading him to another team. "I can honestly say that I have always been incredibly motivated to succeed". Even as incoming college freshmen - or, in the case of Doncic, playing professionally overseas - they sit atop most 2018 mock drafts.

Chicago could have tried to build with Butler. Just to reunite him with Wolves' coach Tom Thibodeau? The two sides engaged on serious discussions on draft night a year ago, but couldn't close it. His rehabilitation has gone well, but the injury certainly complicated the Wolves' re-engaging Chicago on Butler.

He finally broke his silence about the trade - which was widely criticized in terms of the Bulls' return - on Friday night in a conversation with the Chicago Sun-Times. I just want to be winning games, do what I can for my respective organization and let them realize what I'm trying to do.

While not a great 3-point shooter like the Wolves need, Butler still averaged career highs in points (23.9), rebounds (6.2) and assists (5.5) in his sixth season. But instead of keeping Butler, who will turn 28 in September, the Bulls instead opted to commit to a full rebuild. "If there was a way to get a player of Jimmy's ability, we were going to do it".

It's a bold move for the Bulls as they try to climb in the Eastern Conference after getting knocked out of the playoffs by Boston in the first round. Wade opted in for the final year of his contract, but that isn't stopping Chicago from pivoting to a new, younger nucleus that includes LaVine, Dunn, Markkanen and Denzel Valentine.
