Canadians face charges for attack on protesters during Turkish leader's DC visit

Members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's security detail are shown attacking peaceful protesters during Erdogan's trip to Washington in May

Senate and House members have also raised concerns about the recently announced $1.2 million sale of semi-automatic guns slated for use by Turkish President Erdognan's security detail, many of whom participated in the May 16th attacks.

Washington police officials confirmed that the two Americans are Sinan Narin, of Virginia, and Eyup Yildirim, of New Jersey. Most of the security detail, who were tasked with guarding the president during his trip to the capitol, face simple assault charges, although two face felony charges of assault causing significant bodily injury.

It was a brutal display of violence that played out in broad daylight in Washington, DC, and now U.S. authorities are charging members of the Turkish president's security detail.

The paper further reported, however, that it was high unlikely that any of those charged would face extradition to the United States, although they would face arrest if they ever returned. However, the city's police chief said investigators had insufficient evidence to charge Erdogan in what he characterized as a "pretty brutal" attack. "We take our position in the USA, as the nation's capitol, very seriously".

Of the twelve men, seven will be charged with felonies and five with misdemeanors, a law enforcement official was quoted as telling the Chicago Tribune. The State Department tells ABC News they are considering taking additional action against those individuals overseas, which could mean barring future entry or revoking visas. He also said two arrests were made on Wednesday. None of them are Turkish Embassy personnel, he added.

But Mehmet Yuksel, who arrived immediately after the incident and knows nearly all of the dozen or so demonstrators, said they weren't connected with the PKK. He is now awaiting extradition in New Jersey.

Correction: June 15, 2016A previous version of this article misidentified the gender of one of the people charged today.

Nine people were injured when supporters and critics of Erdogan staged a protest near the Turkish ambassador's residence during Erdogan's visit to the compound.

Pictures on Dereci's Facebook page show him posing with other men who resemble participants from videos of the melee, and several pictures with Erdoğan himself. The spectacle of the bodyguards of a foreign autocrat attacking people exercising their free speech rights was unprecedented in recent memory.

The incident comes amid increasingly strained tensions between the US and Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally that has grown more authoritarian in recent years under Erdoğan's leadership and drawn criticism from prominent USA politicians.

Relations were severely strained even before the incident, which came as Erdogan arrived May 16 at the Turkish ambassador's residence after a White House meeting with President Donald Trump.
