Comatose US Student Freed by North Korea Has Severe Brain Injury

Cause of US student’s ‘extensive’ brain damage mystery after North Korea release

Fred also said they followed the Obama administration to keep a low profile.

Warmbier was released from the rogue country on Tuesday.

While there, Yun met with the three other Americans being held, who include two men who taught at a Pyongyang university funded by overseas Christian groups, and a Korean-American pastor accused of espionage for the South.

Spokeswoman Heather Nauert (NOW'-ert) says the USA hopes the other Americans will be able to return home soon.

North Korea claimed Warmbier, 22, collapsed due to botulism and sleeping pills, but American doctors and his family disputed that theory.

Over the next five days, and after consulting Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson instructed Yun to travel to North Korea to negotiate Warmbier's release.

Doctors treating Otto at Cincinnati Medical Center describe his condition as extremely serious after a severe neurological injury.

Unlike in a coma, patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome are technically awake and can show small signs of eye movement, such as blinking, even if they don't display conscious awareness or reaction to their surroundings like in Warmbier's case.

Warmbier is showing no understanding of language, and has suffered a significant loss of brain tissue which doctors believe was probably caused by a cardiopulmonary arrest - not a physical brain injury.

Doctors said they examined Warmbier's body and saw no evidence of fractures that might be evidence of severe beatings.

The hermit state freed Otto Warmbier on Tuesday after about 17 months in custody.

Warmbier was a University of Virginia student when he was detained while touring North Korea. The photos brought home the disturbing news that the University of Virginia student was effectively comatose because of a brain injury. White calls him a "curious boy" and says his adventurous nature led him to travel extensively during summers.

Information on prisons is scarce in North Korea.

His father, Fred Warmbier, said Thursday he does not believe North Korea's explanation that his son's condition is the result of botulism and a sleeping pill.

"There's no excuse for the way the North Koreans treated our son", he said.

When visiting North Korea in January 2014, Rodman sang happy birthday to the North Korean leader at a basketball match between a collection of NBA veterans, young American players, and a North Korean team.

However, the BBC reports that scans performed at the Cincinnati Medical Center show "no sign that he was physically abused during his detention".

Speaking at a press conference Thursday, Otto Warmbier's doctors said he is breathing on his own but does not consistently respond to verbal cues. North Korea has released 22-year-old United States student Otto Warmbier from a 15 year sentence of hard labor, officials said June 13, 2017, as former USA basketball star Dennis Rodman arrived in Pyongyang. "A really good trip", Dennis Rodman said upon his return.

Fred Warmbier called on North Korea to release other American detainees.

Fred told Fox News last Wednesday that his son has been in a coma for over a year.

"I knelt down by his side, and I hugged him, and I told him I missed him and I was so glad that he made it home", Fred Warmbier said. He was then taken by ambulance to a hospital.
