EU presses Britain to get its act together for Brexit talks

With talks due to start in Brussels in ten days time, Mr Tusk said it was their "urgent task" to get on with the negotiations in "the best possible spirit".

RFE/RL: Can the Brexit negotiations really start on June 19 as envisaged?

"We don't know when Brexit talks start". Some compared her to her predecessor David Cameron, who sought to silence Eurosceptic fellow Conservatives by calling the referendum on European Union membership which ended his career and shocked Europe. "I do hope that the result of the election will have no major impact on the negotiations we are desperately waiting for". "Instead of strong and stable leadership we witness chaos and uncertainty", he said.

The British economy is expected to take a hit due to the inconclusive election results - bad news for what is already the slowest growing G7 economy so far this year.

German Chancellor Angela "Merkel will notice that, (French President Emmanuel) Macron will notice that". Her slogan, "No deal is better than a bad deal" was also seen as a direct provocation and a worrisome prospect given European Union countries' strong reliance on cross-Channel trade.

"The DUP [will be] using every ounce of leverage that they have to get the Westminster government to do things they want to do, in terms of the border", Bond said, pointing out that it is unclear from the DUP's manifesto exactly what type of border it wants with the Republic.

Now with the anniversary of Britain's landmark June 23 Brexit vote looming and still no serious negotiations underway, many European Union nations and top officials have had enough.

The firm's chief sovereign analyst Moritz Kraemer told Reuters earlier this week that the shape of the post-Brexit deal with the European Union remained the main factor for the UK's rating.

The Lib Dems, which had campaigned for a second referendum on the terms of Brexit that could mean Britain staying in the bloc, was forecast to gain several seats in areas that voted for "Remain".

According to an analysis in the BBC, the loss of seats by May's party in the election could make Brexit negotiations more hard, as it raises the possibility that the Prime Minister could be unable to sell the tough trade-offs required by a negotiation at home.

The first reaction in Brussels was to rejoice over May's defeat considering her plan to leave the single market and to press ahead with cuts to immigration - a vision labeled "hard Brexit".

"Looks like it was the Brexit election after all".

Morawiecki, who is also Poland's finance minister, said: "It's hard to say I'm happy - because it's not for us to judge the results of the elections in this way". The Tory party won 318 seats and remained the largest political force, but fell short of the 326 seats necessary to form an outright majority in the British Parliament - and of the 330 seats the party owned before the election.

"Article 50 has been triggered and we were on our way". Perhaps it would enable her, the optimists suggested, to tack towards a softer, "more realistic" Brexit posture.

"The timetable, whatever happens here, is likely to be pushed back", the former UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader said.

But what the results reveal actually give no reason for Eurocrats to be cheerful.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said he hopes that the outcome of the British general election will lead to a "softer" Brexit or even to the United Kingdom remaining in the EU. "A vote for one to go and the other to be revisited".
