FIFA targets gay slurs by Chile, Mexico fans in Russia

Next year in 2018, Russian Federation will be making their fourth appearance at a FIFA World Cup where they will be the hosts.

Russia's national football team has a prominent critic ahead of the Confederations Cup — none other than Vladimir Putin.

The Confederations Cup will take place on June 17 to July 2.

Zenit's soccer player Aleksandr Kerzhakov holds white colored and blue eyes 1, 5 years old cat named Achilles at a news conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, Thursday, June 15, 2017.

Hosts Russia, New Zealand and Mexico will compete in Group A alongside Portugal, who will be led by reigning Federation Internationale de Football Association men's player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo.

In April 1996, the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings displayed Russia as the third best-placed team in the world.

The tournament, which features the champions of the six different football confederations as well as the reigning World Cup victor and the host of the next World Cup, acts as a trial event for the upcoming World Cup hosts, with 10 matches staged over two weeks. Group B includes Germany, Chile, Australia and Cameroon. For the Confederations Cup, they will be making their first appearance, where they will be looking to impress in front of a home crowd and build on a successful campaign.

Chile have brought their biggest names like Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez, Man City keeper Claudio Bravo and Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal and will be among the favourites to go all the away, although their attention will be fixed on qualifying from the ultra competitive South American qualifying zone.

Action is due to begin tomorrow with Russian Federation taking on New Zealand in Saint Petersburg.

But as always, the host nation gets an opportunity to test the water so to speak and that's in the shape of the Confederations Cup. It is played by the continental champions plus the host nation and the World Cup victor.

Although the reigning World Cup champion has won the Confederations Cup three times since 1997, when the event began including representatives from all of FIFA's confederations, no team has won the event and then won the World Cup the following year.

Russian Federation coach Stanislav Cherchesov said he would welcome a duel with the five-time World Cup winners.

New Zealand lost both their recent friendlies 1-0, against Northern Ireland and Belarus, respectively, but Hudson believes that this has not impacted their preparation.
