Hamilton wins F1 Canadian GP, picks up points on Vettel

Lewis Hamilton's sensational record at the Canadian Grand Prix continued as he took a huge bite out of Sebastian Vettel's lead in the Formula One drivers' standings.

Team by team analysis of Sunday's Canadian Formula One Grand Prix in Montreal (listed in championship order): MERCEDES (Lewis Hamilton 1, Valtteri Bottas 2) Hamilton's sixth win in Canada, and third in a row in Montreal, was the 56th of his career.

With a much sought after win, Lewis Hamilton has closed the gap between him and Vettel down to just 12 points. "It was really down to the team, great minds working together, communicating".

Native Montrealer Lance Stroll was ninth - the first-ever points for the 18-year-old rookie; Hamilton gave him a thumbs-up as he passed on the track.

Behind the top four it was Perez in fifth followed by Ocon, Raikkonen in the second Ferrari, Hulkenberg, Stroll and Grosjean in the last points place.

Hamilton's record is remarkable in Montreal - his six wins in 10 races leaves him one shy of Michael Schmacher's record total of seven victories at the circuit. Finland's Valtteri Bottas, who replaced retired 2016 champion Nico Rosberg at Mercedes in January, qualified third with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, the polesitter in Monaco two weeks ago, fourth. "We came here with the auto back to where it should be, it doesn't mean it's going to be like that every time but I think we've learned a lot and I'm happy".

The incident ended both their days and brought out the safety car.At the restart Verstappen attacked Hamilton hard, nearly making a pass that would have changed the race. As a kid, I always thought if I can get to F1 I want to emulate Ayrton, so the fact that I've now reached him in that area, I honestly can't believe it.

"It was tough I was defending the whole race and we weren't that quick to be honest".

Hamilton led from pole to flag in a flawless race but significantly - after a hard weekend at the last round in Monaco, where he struggled to find the right setup and could finish only in seventh - he and the team had their vehicle hooked up from the off in Montreal. "Hopefully the Hamilton-Vettel duel will remain tense all the way to the end". But the silver cars were right up there and the laptimes pointed to another close, hard-fought battle between Ferrari and Mercedes, Vettel and Hamilton.

"We've been working very hard over the last two weeks to rectify the issues we had with the auto", said Hamilton.

"I knew where Sebastian was throughout the race", said Hamilton, who crossed the line a commanding 20 seconds clear of Bottas.

When Bottas too went into the pits on lap 23, Esteban Ocon managed to take his Force India into the second position and stayed there, until his first pit stop on lap 32. TV replays showed that the fast-starting Verstappen had nicked the nose of the Ferrari at Turn One, but the stewards took no action. It was his third podium finish in five visits to Canada.
