Heart Condition Could Cost Nick Fairley His Career

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says Nick Fairley has been placed on the team's non-football illness list, meaning the starting defensive tackle won't play this season.

Fairley was initially diagnosed with a heart condition at the combine but he went on to play seven years in the NFL. He could still play again, but heart conditions are serious and potentially life threatening, and it certainly seems like his was thoroughly evaluated. It was revealed during the event that he had an enlarged heart, but no concerns have been raised since this offseason.

Fairley apparently consulted with a pair of doctors about whether or not he should continue playing professional football.

The former Auburn standout has missed Saints OTA's this spring and summer while undergoing testing and visiting a cardiologist.

Fairley joined the Saints last season after being drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2011 and spending a season with the St. Louis Rams.

Fairley recorded 43 tackles and a career-best 6.5 sacks with the Saints in 2016.

"The things we know are this: It's obviously something significant and serious that we've got to play attention to, obviously both for Nick and for the club", Saints coach Sean Payton said earlier this month.
