IDF confirms retaliatory strike on Syria military positions

Israel strikes Syrian regime forces near Golan

A spokesperson with the Israeli military said that the attack came in response to 10 projectiles from Syria that hit the Israeli-held Golan Heights.

The channel also quoted Syrian army sources as claiming that the Israeli attack was coordinated with a strike by the jihadist al-Nusra front, one of the rebel groups fighting the government near the Golan Heights.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday addressed Israel's concern about Iran's military buildup in Syria and said that Israel views this as a grave matter.

While Israel has refrained from intervening in the Syrian conflict, the IDF has responded to stray fire from Syria with artillery shelling or an air strike against Syrian army or rebel positions, in most cases targeting the source of fire.

On its official Twitter account, Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, said several projectiles fired from Syria landed in northern Golan Heights.

Calling the incident an "unacceptable violation of Israeli sovereignty", IDF aircraft targeted the "origin of launches and two Syrian tanks". There were no casualties or damage reported from the mortars although the Israeli government warned both hikers and farmers to stay away from the border.

Syrian state-run news agency SANA reported that several people were killed in the Israeli strikes.

"Last night the IDF attacked Syrian military targets". The cooperation began when the Israelis began assisting Syrian fighters, including alleged "Islamist extremists", through medical care at Israeli hospitals, in a relationship that soon led to direct funding for fighters for salaries, ammunition and weapons. "We will respond strongly to any firing at our territory", he stated.

It was the second day in a row that errant fire from Syria drew Israeli retaliation.
