Iran holds annual anti-Israel rallies, displays missiles

Across the Muslim world, thousands rally against Israel on the last day of Ramadan marking the International Quds (Jerusalem) Day: Iranians march through Tehran chanting "Death to Israel" and "Death to America", while hundreds of members and supporters of Hezbollah stood at the border fence between Israel and Lebanon with the terror organization's and Palestinian flags, holding signs that read, "We are coming." . State media reported that similar rallies were underway in other cities and towns in Iran.

This year's commemoration coincides with an escalating power struggle for influence in the region between Iran and Saudi Arabia, together with its Gulf neighbours.

Quds Day, also known as Al-Quds Day, as a historic Arabic name for Jerusalem, is aimed at protesting Israel and Zionism, and to express support for Palestinians and the importance of Jerusalem for the religion of Islam.

Marchers in Tehran were converging from various points of the city onto the Friday Prayers ceremony at Tehran University.

'Daesh (IS), America and Israel are all the same.

Rouhani told reporters that the rally was Iran's response to the USA violations of the "rights of people" of Iran after the Senate last week approved new sanctions on Tehran over its missile program, something Congress is expected to decide on soon.

That day, Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said a world without violence "is a world free from the Zionist regime" and called Israel the "root cause of all problems, violences and insecurities in the Muslim world and the entire world".

Senior Iranian government, legislative and military officials, including President Hassan Rouhani and the Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, participated in the rallies.

Protesters attending anti-Israel rallies across Iran declared that destroying the Jewish state is "the Muslim world's top priority".

The figure of 8,411 days - or just over 23 years - on the panel is based on a speech which Khamenei gave almost two years ago predicting Israel would no longer exist by 2040. Iran has marked the day since the start of its 1979 Islamic Revolution, when the country cut relations with Israel.

The display included surface-to-surface missiles "Zolfaghar" (with 2000 km range), "Qadr" (with 700 km range).

Protesters could also be seen burning the IS flag, after the terrorist group claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in the country's capital earlier this month.
