Iran launches missiles into eastern Syria

UNCEF welcomes EU Commission's €90m education programme for minor refugees

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps on Sunday said it launched missiles into Syria targeting Islamic State militants in retaliation for the June 7 Tehran attack in which 18 people died.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards have reportedly launched ground-to-ground mid-range ballistic missiles from the western Iranian provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan into the eastern Syrian province of Deir-ez Zor.

"To that end the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps ... a while ago has conducted missile attacks on Takfiri terrorists' command centers, gatherings, logistic sites and factories of suicide auto bombs in Deir ez-Zor region, east of Syria", said the IRGC in a statement. Iran identifies Islamic State militants as "Takfiri terrorists".

Iran is allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the ongoing Syrian civil war.

In those attacks, ISIS-linked fighters stormed Parliament and a shrine to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Iran has described the attackers as being "long affiliated with the Wahhabi", an ultraconservative form of Sunni Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia. It was the first time that ISIS, a Sunni Muslim group fighting Iranian-backed militias in Syria, has claimed responsibility for an attack in Iran. The rivals are on opposite sides of violent conflicts in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere.
