Lions and Auckland Blues fans clash in New Zealand tour warm-up match

Warren Gatland will be looking for an improved performance tomorrow night

The British and Irish Lions slipped to their first tour defeat as a late Ihaia West try saw the Blues record a historic victory.

The Lions will face Auckland Blues on Wednesday night in the second match of their 10-game tour of New Zealand, but wanted to offer a strong message back home to the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Player ratingsBritish and Irish Lions: Leigh Halfpenny 6, Jack Nowell 4, Jared Payne 6, Robbie Henshaw 5, Elliot Daly 5, Dan Biggar 6, Rhys Webb 8, Jack McGrath 7, Ken Owens 7, Dan Cole 6, Maro Itoje 6, Courtney Lawes 7, James Haskell 5, Justin Tipuric 5, CJ Stander 7. "We were coming here to get another victory but unfortunately we got a defeat".

"They can take a while to settle down, but I am not too sure".

Gatland faced questions from global media in Auckland on Monday night ahead of the team's clash with the Blues at Eden Park on Wednesday.

Warren Gatland's side lost in their second game of the tour at Eden Park (22-16) and Owens admitted there were parts of their game that need to be adjusted to suit the opposition. While the Lions had a footing in the match through their scrum, they made few attempts to play attacking rugby and were vulnerable to the counter-attacking style of the Blues.

It turned out it was a test the Lions weren't prepared for as they ended up on the losing side with Williams' controversial try proving crucial. They were forced under pressure to kick the ball into the Blues' hands and that furnished opportunities to the home team.

With the last play of the half, a Perofeta penalty goal struck the upright and bounced back for Test midfielder Williams to plant down.

Perofeta was handed his first start for the Blues but apart from the pass to Ioane, he struggled to control the match.

The Lions seized the lead with a try to South Africa-born flanker C.J. Stander from a lineout drive and extended that lead with Halfpenny's first penalty.
