London Tower Block Fire Death Toll Rises to 58

The fire broke out at the 24-storey block, which contained 120 one- and two-bedroom flats, shortly before 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police Commander Stuart Cundy said the number of 58 is based on reports from the public and may rise.

The latest figure included the previously released number of 30 deaths in the catastrophe in North Kensington early Wednesday. The recovery effort resumed this afternoon, but the police warn it could take weeks for answers to emerge. "We'll get to the bottom of this", she said. "I absolutely get why they are angry", he said.

Local councils will also carry out safety checks on buildings similar to the Grenfell Tower, the prime minister said.

It's thought that the deadly fire at Grenfell spread because the building was covered in hundreds of aluminum panels called Reynobond, which in its cheaper form has a flammable plastic core.

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard. He asked anyone who was in the tower and survived to contact police immediately.

On the lack of sprinklers in Grenfell Tower, and other buildings, he said: "My understanding is that the best expert advice is that retrofitting sprinklers may not always be the best technical way of ensuring fire safety in a building".

Activists and local residents held demonstrations at the borough's town hall, London's Oxford Street, the United Kingdom home office, the BBC, and the prime minister's official residence at Number 10 Downing Street to vent their frustrations.

It tore through all floors of the building and took more than 200 firefighters and 24 hours to bring it under control.

Meanwhile, the Home Office said it was making arrangements for the family of one of those who died in the fire to travel from Syria to Britain for his funeral.

A soccer player says that he will donate 50 pounds (more than $60) for each minute he plays at a European youth tournament to the victims of London's high-rise inferno.

Prime Minister Theresa May met with victims of the disaster at Downing Street on Saturday, before declaring that the support given to families in the aftermath of the tragedy was "not good enough".

Some victims may never be identified.

"Everything possible will be done to help them", the prime minister said of the victims in a statement.

Officials are using dental records, fingerprints and DNA samples to try and positively identify victims. They paid their respects before the start of the annual Trooping the Color procession that marks the observance of the queen's birthday.

The 91-year-old monarch said that Britain remains "resolute in the face of adversity" after the horrendous fire and recent extremist attacks in London and Manchester. This year, however, it is very hard to escape a very sombre national mood.

In a television interview Friday, she sidestepped questions over whether she had misread the public mood.

Kensington and Chelsea Town Hall became another flashpoint on Friday with protesters storming the building, accusing authorities of ignoring them and of forcing low-income families to live in sub-standard housing.
