Mali tourist resort 'under attack'

The west African country has been battling a jihadist insurgency for several years with Islamist fighters roaming the north and centre of Mali

"Malian special forces intervened and about 20 hostages have been released", Salif Traoré said.

The European Union training mission in Mali said it was aware of the attack, adding it was supporting Malian Security Forces and assessing the situation.

A Dingo tank of the Bundeswehr, the German armed forces, enters Camp Castor after returning from a trainings mission on March 6, 2017 in Gao, Mali.

At least two people have been killed after gunmen stormed a popular tourist resort on the outskirts of Mali's capital, Bamako, according to officials. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

"There is an attack by presumed jihadists on the Kangaba camp", he said, confirming that Malian special forces, backed up by French and United Nations soldiers, "have sealed off the area and are in the process of organising operations" against the attackers, the official said, requesting anonymity.

The US embassy in Bamako had warned earlier this month "of a possible increased threat of attacks against Western diplomatic missions, places of worship, and other locations in Bamako where Westerners frequent".

The resort near the capital of Bamako is popular with westerners.

Security has gradually worsened in Mali since French forces pushed back allied Islamist and Tuareg rebel fighters in 2013 from swathes of the north they had occupied the previous year.

A devastating attack on the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako later that year left 20 dead - six Malians and 14 foreigners.

Malian troops and soldiers from France's Bakhane regional counter-terrorist force were surrounding the site, a resort boasting accommodation in hut-style rooms as well as restaurants and swimming pools.

The attack was claimed by Al-Qaeda's North African affiliate Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
