Marlins' Volquez throwing no-hitter through 6 versus Arizona

Marlins' Volquez throwing no-hitter through 6 versus Arizona

After striking out Diamondbacks hitter Chris Owings to complete his first career no-hitter Saturday, Marlins pitcher Edinson Volquez dedicated his performance to two dear friends.

The no-hitter was the Marlins' first since Henderson Alvarez was on the mound for a 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on September 29, 2013.

So was Yordano Ventura, the Kansas City pitcher who was killed in a auto crash in the Dominican Republic in January. His no-hitter comes on the same day as what would have been Ventura's 26th birthday.

The Marlins were also quick to shower the 33-year-old with love.

Diamondbacks centre fielder Gregor Blanco left the game in the fourth inning with a jammed left thumb.

Nicholas Castellanos and Alex Presley hit back-to-back homers in the second inning, and Alex Avila and Justin Upton also homered for the Tigers, who have outscored Chicago 25-6 in the first two games of the weekend series.

We also nearly knocked Volquez out in the opening AB, as he collided with Rey Fuentes as they headed to first-base (above).

Volquez pitched the rest of the game with a bandaged right ankle, but he thought the injury was much worse when it happened.

Volquez faced 27 batters, throwing 65 of his 98 pitches for strikes. He came into Saturday 1-7 this season, and the Marlins lead 1-0. He allowed just one run over 5.1 innings, and was somewhat unfortunate to give that up.

While Volquez had never thrown a no-hitter before, he did toss a one-hitter July 19, 2012, in a victory for the Padres over the Astros. "And today I had a no-hitter". The Marlins now have thrown the most no-hitters in baseball (six) since entering the league in 1993.

Saturday's outing was the sixth no-no in Marlins history and just the second in Marlins Park.

Marlins: 3B Martin Prado (hamstring) has been taking ground balls and is continuing to work his way back, with the expectation remaining that he could return within two weeks.

Locke, who made 110 starts and was 35-38 in six seasons with the Pirates, hadn't started in the majors since Aug 3 when he gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings in Atlanta.
