May confirms 'deal' with DUP following election result

Theresa May heads to Buckingham Palace to seek minority government

She insisted that she would stick to the Brexit timetable. This did not help May, who, in her previous role as interior miniser for six years, had overseen cuts in the number of police officers.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May will meet Queen Elizabeth II on Friday in order to seek permission to form a government despite her Conservative Party's failure to secure a majority vote in the nation's general election.

May spoke outside Downing Street this afternoon after returning from a brief meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Why did she call an election? This is where a cabinet is sworn into office despite not commanding a majority in parliament.

May spent the campaign denouncing Corbyn as the weak leader of a spendthrift party that would ruin Britain's economy and flounder in Brexit talks.

EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, tweeted early Friday that negotiations should start "when the United Kingdom is ready". But EU Council President Donald Tusk said: "We know when they must end".

May said this was vital as the Brexit talks were due to begin in just ten days time. None of these governments achieved anything very memorable in terms of legislation (although MacDonald proved effective in foreign affairs, acting as his own Foreign Secretary).

"At this time more than anything else this country needs a period of stability and as the indications have shown and if this is correct, the Conservatives got the most seats and probably the most votes, then it would be incumbent on to assure we have that period of stability, and that is exactly what we will do", she announced.

With 649 of 650 seats declared, the Conservatives had won 318 seats and Labour 261. But even that arrangement seemed shaky.

The Conservatives are pushing for a "hard Brexit" by severing all ties with the European Union, while Labour prefers a "soft Brexit", which calls for keeping borders open and reducing tariffs on British exports.

In May's camp, recriminations were immediate and stinging.

"What tonight is about is the rejection of Theresa May's version of extreme Brexit", said Keir Starmer, Labour's policy chief on Brexit, saying his party wanted to retain the benefits of the European single market and customs union. He ruled out the potential for deals or pacts with other progressive parties in Parliament.

"I think we need a change". With Thursday's election providing 29 new Labour MPs, Corbyn's energetic election campaign has paid off. It drew strong support from young people, who appeared to have turned out to vote in bigger-than-expected numbers. "I was kind of hoping it would just go the way that the polls suggested it would and we could have a quiet life in Westminster but now it's going to be a bit of a mess".

She became First Minister in January 2016 and served until Martin McGuinness resigned in protest at her "cash for ash" scheme in January 2017, resulting in the collapse of power-sharing.

"And this gives me the confidence to believe that we will be able to work together in the interests of the whole United Kingdom". It proved far more damaging than that and included some high-profile scalps. And dreams of an independent Scotland from Scottish nationalists have been shattered.
