May's UK election gamble backfires as Tories lose majority

The Sun

LONDON — Theresa May has confirmed she plans to stay on as Britains prime minister to provide certainty to the country, with support from Northern Irelands Democratic Unionist Party.

Instead, her strategy backfired as the election took away the Conservative majority and sent the country into political turmoil.

"This will allow us to come together as a country and channel our energies towards a successful Brexit deal that works for everyone in this country - securing a new partnership with the European Union which guarantees our long term prosperity", May said.

May had called for the early elections in the hopes of gaining a larger majority and a stronger mandate when negotiating Britain's exit from the European Union, known as Brexit.

She seems secure for the immediate future, because senior Conservatives don't want to plunge the party into a damaging leadership contest. "The PM called this election because she wanted a mandate". "I'm not sure that we should read, from the results of this vote, that Britons' sovereign decision on Brexit has been cast into doubt in any way".

Out of 650 seats in the United Kingdom parliament, the ruling Conservative Party needed 326 seats to win an overall majority to continue as Britain's Prime Minister while the exit poll predicts that May will win not more than 314 seats.

Conservative lawmaker Nicky Morgan told ITV that she could support a confidence and supply arrangement with the DUP, but any closer deal would be "a step too far". Speaking after being re-elected to his London seat, Corbyn said May should "go. and make way for a government that is truly representative of all the people of this country". I think I'd join a lot of people when I say the Theresa May and Conservative campaign was very lacking in what they were going to offer the public.

The coalition between Conservatives and the DUP is facing backlash, as many don't agree with the Northern Irish party's hard-right views.

With the complex talks on the divorce from the European Union due to start in 10 days, it was unclear what their direction would now be and if the so-called "Hard Brexit" taking Britain out of a single market could still be pursued. Labour's increase in seats from 229 to 261 - with one seat still undecided - confounded expectations that his left-wing views made him electorally toxic.

"We need a government that can act", Oettinger told radio station Deutschlandfunk, according to the Reuters news agency. The Democratic Unionist Party won 10 seats. As she was resoundingly re-elected to her Maidenhead seat in southern England, May looked tense and did not spell out what she planned to do.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Boerge Brende said the election outcome could mean a less radical split between Britain and the EU.

During the campaign, Corbyn condemned the Conservatives for cutting the number of police officers by 20,000 since 2010. However, she brought this upon herself.

What started out as a sure thing turned into a cliff-hanger and ultimately resulted in a "hung Parliament," where no party was able to achieve a parliamentary majority. How stable can such a government be is anyone's guess.
