Megyn Kelly's controversial Alex Jones interview elicited praise, disgust

Megyn Kelly

Connecticut's NBC affiliate, WVIT, broke with the network last night by refusing to run Megyn Kelly's interview with Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist who claimed the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre was a staged event created to promote tougher gun control laws. "Some thought we shouldn't broadcast this interview because his baseless allegations aren't just offensive, they're risky", Kelly said.

The interview was a segment on "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly".

And Kelly didn't just lose viewers.

Yesterday's episode averaged 3.5 million viewers, a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 and a 0.7 rating among adults 25-54, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Free Beacon's report said that a previous headline for that story had called the interview an "edited NBC interview", but took that word out later.

"As in her interviews with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, Kelly proved unable to generate surprising, interesting, or even novel responses from her subject", Socolow wrote. One of the interview topics was Jones' claims that the shooting was a "false flag" to push new gun control laws.

The show with Jones, the controversial figure who has called the Sandy Hook massacre a hoax and 9/11 attacks an "inside job", brought in an average of 3.5 million viewers.

Kelly challenged Jones from the start, introducing him as a "radical conspiracy theorist" and promising to confront him on his "notorious lie" about Sandy Hook. Although his theory has been discredited, people who believe Jones have harassed and taunted families of the victims. Hockley's 6-year-old son Dylan, and Barden's 7-year-old son Daniel were among those killed in the mass shooting. An unaired segment obtained by Huffington Post showed Kelly telling him that "virtually every person we have met on the street says what they respect about you is they feel that you have returned dignity to Russian Federation".

Prior to the interview, Kelly released a statement on Twitter June 13 explaining the importance of airing her conversation with Jones.

Lawyers who represent 12 people who lost loved ones at Sandy Hook urged NBC News officials not to air the interview.
