Murray, Wawrinka make French Open last 16

Murray and Del Potro meet again; Wawrinka also in action

Andy Murray did enough to keep his nose in front throughout, while the giant Argentine was unable to reprise the heroics that saw the pair produce such magic in last year's Rio Olympics gold medal match.

A frustrated Del Potro stood at the net for a while between the interval.

Murray and Del Potro contested a couple of epic matches in 2016, with the Brit winning in four sets in the Olympic final in Brazil and the Argentine winning over five hours in the Davis Cup semi-finals.

Losing that set on a disputed line call cut the 28-year-old del Potro deep.

Murray, who finished a total of 44 winners and converted 6 of 17 break points, prevailed in the following two sets with 7-5, 6-0.

Eventually, del Potro went to his sideline seat and covered his face with a white towel.

She led by a set but trailed in the second set. He has made it to the fourth round for the eighth time in 10 appearances at the clay-court tournament.

It was no surprise that Del Potro quickly fell a break behind in the second. "I played really well during the points today, and like in the last round I found a way to turn the match around".

"It's a very big shot", highlighted Murray. I was going to try and just get through the first round and hopefully feel better each day.

The 30-year-old said: "It was obviously an important win for me and a big match because Juan, when he's playing well, is one of the best players in the world". That's very positive, because I wasn't doing that for the last few tournaments and the last couple of matches I have done it, and totally turned the matches around.

Switzerland's third seed Stan Wawrinka progressed after claiming a 7-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Italy's Fabio Fognini. "She's one of those youngsters I see working very hard and fighting for every point".

Simona Halep, the 2014 runner-up, said the torn ligament in her right ankle is no longer an issue and proved that by defeating 26th-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Russian Federation 6-0, 7-5.

The third-round match between a pair of past major champions was much tighter than the straight-set scoreline might indicate.

"If I say something, you guys ask me what I was saying; if I say nothing, you ask me why I don't say anything".

"He took the little chance to win both (of the first two) sets, Del Potro reflected".

Croatian Marin Cilic, seeded seventh, beat Spain's Feliciano Lopez 6-1 6-3 6-3 and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco advanced after beating Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas 6-2 6-1 6-3.

STAT OF THE DAY: South Africa's Kevin Anderson moved to the top of the service charts with victory over Britain's Kyle Edmund.

Elena Vesnina was dumped out of the women's singles after she lost in straight sets to Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4, 6-4, and French favourite Alize Cornet beat Agnieszka Radwanska out of the competition with a 6-2, 6-1 hammering.
