Nadal Wins 10th French Open, Makes Tennis History

Spain's Rafael Nadal clenches his fist invictory after defeating Austria's Dominic Thiem during their semifinal match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium Friday

Whether or not that happens, Nadal's lack of points to defend in comparison to Murray - who only lost two matches after the French Open past year - make it seem virtually nailed on that he will overtake him at some point in the next six months.

At 31, Nadal might have time to add to his French Open tally.

The American-Czech pair defeated unseeded Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua of Australia 6-2, 6-1 for their third successive major title.

The third-seeded Wawrinka of Switzerland was vying for his second Roland Garros title, winning in 2015 for one of his three major championships. "It's the most important event in my career, so to win here is something I can not describe".

"The nerves and adrenaline I feel on this court is impossible to compare". The win also propelled him above Pete Sampras to second spot in the all-time Grand Slam titles list with 15, behind great rival Roger Federer, who has 18.

A year ago in Paris, Nadal surprisingly withdrew before the third round because of a wrist injury, making the announcement at a news conference while wearing a blue brace on his left arm and a look of resignation of his face.

However, despite boasting a 15-3 head-to-head superiority over 32-year-old Wawrinka, the oldest man in the Paris final in 44 years, Nadal is wary of complacency.

"Wawrinka is a very unsafe opponent, so my mentality was that I can not give him the chance to be back on the match", he added.

Nadal did not lose a set in this year's tournament and only dropped a total of 35 games. He's been the favorite throughout the tournament, as he's only ever lost two matches on the clay of the French Open.

"He's the best player ever on clay".

"I feel that I have been playing well since the start of this season and it has been very special". They did let out a burst of claps and roars in the second set on one particularly exquisite display: Nadal sprinted to his left to chase Wawrinka's cross-court backhand wide of the doubles alley and whipped a forehand that curved around the net post and landed near a line for a victor.

Top seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova won their fifth Grand Slam women's doubles title on Sunday at Roland Garros, putting them halfway to a calendar Slam.

"It's always been an honor to play against you", Wawrinka told Nadal as he addressed the crowd. At one point during the match his frustration got the better of him and he broke his racket over his knee.

While Wawrinka needed the best part of five hours to defeat world number one Andy Murray, Nadal brushed aside Dominic Thiem, the conqueror of Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

But Nadal's 10th title at Roland Garros is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the incredible nature of his success. He is now 3-1 in Grand Slam finals.
