Navy confirms 7 died in USS Fitzgerald collision off Japan

Sailor Found Hiding on Navy Ship 7 Days After Disappearing

US Seventh Fleet commander Vice-Admiral Joseph Aucoin said that search-and-rescue efforts for the seven had ceased after divers found bodies in flooded compartments of the USS Fitzgerald.

She says they moved to CT was Huynh was in eighth grade.

The collision occurred at 2:30 a.m. local time about 56 nautical miles off the coast of Yokosuka, Japan, which is home to the 7th Fleet.

He said one machinery room and two berthing areas for 116 crew members were severely damaged from the impact to the ship's side.

Navy spokesman Lt. Paul Newell said the sailors might have been killed by the impact of the collision or drowned in the flooding.

All of the ACX Crystal's 20-member Filipino crew were safe, said Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen K.K., which operates the Philippine-flagged ship.

"I look forward to being with my Fitzgerald family in support of future missions and exercises", Benson said in a Navy statement at the time.

Three sailors were injured in the accident, including Commander Bryce Benson, USS Fitzgerald's commanding officer.

Sixteen hours following the predawn Saturday collision, the destroyer was pumping out water as it limped back to its home port in Yokosuka Naval Base south of Tokyo by sunset Saturday, its crew lined up on deck. A news release from U.S. Seventh Fleet confirmed that two berthing spaces, an auxiliary machine room and the ship's radio room all flooded.

None of the 20 crew members aboard of the Philippine-flagged Crystal were injured. Yoko Kato, a spokeswoman for the US Navy in Yokosuka, said not all seven were recovered.

Two others were airlifted off the ship and treated in the hospital for lacerations and bruises.

Sykes says her son told her that sailors initially believed they were under attack and some immediately went to man the guns.

"I ask that you [keep] your thoughts and prayers for the family members and the crew", USA 7th Fleet commander Vice Admiral Joseph P. Aucoin said at a press conference Sunday afternoon local time.

The coast guard questioned crew members of the ACX Crystal, and is treating the collision as a case of possible professional negligence, said Masayuki Obara, a regional coast guard official.

He thanked "our Japanese allies" for their swift assistance, and said the Navy will full investigate the cause.

The 10,000-ton guided-missile destroyer and the ACX Crystal, a 29,000-ton container ship collided off Japan's Izu Peninsula. USA aircraft is assisting in the effort, along with several Japanese helicopters and one plane, the 7th Fleet said. The area is particularly busy with sea traffic, said Yutaka Saito of the coast guard.

While the container ship sustained little damage, the destroyer suffered severe damage to its starboard side. It is not yet clear how many were found.
