Never touched black money, says Prannoy Roy; vows to fight CBI case

CBI raid on NDTV: Press freedom in India suffers major blow, says NYT, recalling strict censorship of 1975-77

In an apparent reference to the raids conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation on NDTV in an alleged bank fraud case, its co-founder and executive co-chairperson Prannoy Roy today said such acts can not muzzle the freedom of the press and we will emerge unscathed after the attack. "Today, when we are facing more or less the same situation - not (to) that extent - all of us have to ensure we don't allow anybody to muzzle free speech".

Talking about the raid former Union Minister and veteran journalist Arun Shourie alleged that the current government is controlling the media and that they are using two major instruments to do so.

"When 400 cases were filed against Ramnath Goenka, he said we have broken many laws already, so how does it matter", Gupta said. And the fact that there is no case, but a flimsy, ridiculous, concocted set of facts.

Jurist Fali Nariman said: "Freedom after speech is what freedom of speech is all about". First they used incentives like ads, then a subterranean atmosphere of fear. These ministers are bandhua mazdoor (bonded labours) of Modi, they only want to show Modi that we have done this much publicity for you.

"Whenever there is a majoritarian government, there is this tendency".

The Information and Broadcasting minister Venkaiah Naidu dismissed the allegations that the NDTV searches were an encroachment on press freedom.Senior officials in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office and members of his nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have told Reuters they consider NDTV to be the least government-friendly channel.India slipped three places to 136th in this year's World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Border, which highlighted concerns that Hindu nationalists were "trying to purge all manifestations of anti-national thought".

He said, "This is a warning to all others that if you don't fall in line you'll meet a similar fate".

In his complaint he states "Neither the bank nor the promoters of M/s NDTV Ltd made disclosures of creation of such collateral in favour of the bank". She said, "Beta, these are good people".

Aroon Purie, Editor-in-Chief, India Today Group, joined in stating that he strongly believed that the "freedom of the media is inviolable in a democracy".

"If you (journalists) think that if you give prominence to articles of some of the ministers in newspapers or give them air time, they will help you in crisis. The CBI said on Tuesday that it 'fully respects the freedom of press.' Even if that's true, the question still outstanding is whether Mr Modi does". "This will intensify in the coming months because of the nature of the regime - its genes are totalitarian".
