NHL Draft Projections: Fleury and Neal to Vegas

Ken's take: The Jets' final decision regarding their protected list hinges on whether defenceman Toby Enstrom was asked and ultimately decides to waive his no-movement clause. Some of the other names available to the Golden Knights from San Jose may be more attractive, but the team's roster is aging, so some of the better names are veterans.

All 30 existing rosters will freeze beginning at this time. There's also an "expansion draft signing moratorium" for everyone except Vegas, but the trade freeze is most likely to generate some interesting moments today.

The Central Registry will accept these at the same time so that there's no amusing business around leaks or anything. "They don't want to lose two players if you make a deal".

Several players listed - namely Barkov, Huberdeau, Trocheck, Ekblad, Petrovic, Yandle and Reimer - come as no surprise; but some fans were shocked to see forwards Jonathan Marchessault, who led team with 30 goals in 2016-17 season, or Reilly Smith, 37 points in this past season, left unprotected.

So, with all that in mind, here are the players the Bruins are expected to protect when the list is submitted and made public. That should be a fun Father's Day morning. Vegas has the next three days, June 18-21, to sign free agents and it will submit its picks at 10 a.m. June 21. Are the Stars going to chance it and leave one of them exposed, or has general manager Jim Nill already swung a deal to give Vegas a draft pick to protect an extra player?

The Blue Jackets may have a deal in place with the Golden Knights to keep them from picking certain players at the draft, but it appears the Nashville Predators are having trouble doing something similar.

That means players exposed for the Knights to potentially select will include forwards David Perron, Jori Lehtera, Kyle Brodziak, Dmitrij Jaskin, defensemen Carl Gunnarsson, Robert Bortuzzo and goalie Carter Hutton. Marchessault is a free agent after this coming season. They will identify the best asset on each team they can select. We know that the likes of Jason Spezza, Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn, Radek Faksa, Valeri Nichushkin (yes, he'll be protected), John Klingberg, and Esa Lindell are virtual locks to be protected.

As expected, the Red Wings have protected seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie in the National Hockey League expansion draft. Teams also must make one goaltender available who is under contract for next season.

Next week will be a big one for the Las Vegas Golden Knights with the National Hockey League in town for their annual awards show Wednesday night.

"I've had conversations with him and I think that's a two-step process".

"Everyone's a little nervous, they're a little reluctant", Florida GM Dale Tallon said on Toronto's TSN 1050.

Second, clearing Fleury's $5.75 million off the salary cap, with Pittsburgh not needing to trade Fleury and take back a salary would be a huge and very rare opportunity to have a lot of cap room heading into free agency. Ryan has five years left on a seven-year $50.8 million contract and represents a $7-plus-million cap hit.

"Sometimes at 3 a.m., I wake up and remind myself, 'You can only lose one player, go back to sleep, '" Fletcher told reporters earlier this week.
