Pentagon: 3 USA soldiers killed, 1 wounded in Afghanistan

In an emailed statement, the USA military said only: "We are aware of an incident in eastern Afghanistan".

Afghan and American officials are investigating the incident.

Three US troops were killed when an Afghan soldier opened fire on them in eastern Afghanistan, according to officials.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the militants claimed responsibility for the attack.

The statement claimed the infiltrator managed to kill four USA troops before he was killed by Afghan soldiers.

Three US servicemen were killed on Saturday in eastern Afghanistanwhen an Afghan soldier opened fire on them. The official asked not to be identified because the information had not yet been officially released and the USA military was still investigating the episode. "Additional information will be released as appropriate", the statement said Saturday. Trump is at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey.Vice President Mike Pence, speaking at an event in Milwaukee, briefly addressed the attack.

There are now 8,400 American troops in Afghanistan training, advising and assisting the Afghanistan army. The Romanians were were training Afghan forces at the time of the attack. The three other US soldiers killed in Achin earlier this year "make up the entirety of USA combat fatalities in Afghanistan in 2017", according to the Washington Post. A spokesman for the provincial governor told the news service that the Afghan soldier was subsequently killed.




"When heroes fall Americans grieve", Pence added.

So called green-on-blue attacks aren't uncommon in Afghanistan and happen for various reasons.

The Achin District is home to a US army base that is tasked with ant-terrorism operations. US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops have been at war there since 2001, after the ousting of the Taliban regime.

The incident occurred during a joint U.S.

The war-torn nation, and particularly its capital city of Kabul, has also witnessed an uptick in deadly suicide bombings in recent weeks, causing unprecedented civilian casualties.
