People Confirmed Dead in Grenfell Tower Fire With 70 Still Unaccounted For

The protesters chanted: "We want justice", "bring them out" and "shame on you".

"At least 30 fatalities have been confirmed; the bodies of twelve people have been recovered and are at a mortuary, which includes one person who has also died at hospital, despite the best efforts of colleagues in the NHS", the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

High-rise tower blocks dating from the 1960s and 1970s could be torn down in the wake of the deadly Grenfell Tower fire, London mayor Sadiq Khan said.

Grenfell Tower is a public housing block owned by the local government council and managed by a non-profit organisation known as the Kensington and Chelsea Tenants Management Organization. The 24-story building is home to hundreds of people, and the fire blazed until early in the morning.

Prime Minister Theresa May came in for trenchant criticism from angry victims of Grenfell Tower tragedy for allegedly being "cold as a fish" to it, but Queen Elizabeth II was hailed for reflecting the national mood on Saturday, her official birthday.

The disaster has prompted an outpouring of support and generosity, with shocked Londoners donating so many clothes, shoes and bedsheets that volunteers were soon overwhelmed.

Official fire service advice for residents to stay in their homes and use towels to block out smoke, while awaiting help, has also come under scrutiny.

The Met are unable to confirm the actual number of people who still remain missing after the fire, but it's definitely high.

"I'm positive because I think it was a real chance for local residents, people affected by this tragedy, to voice their concerns directly to the prime minister so that she could hear them".

The government has ordered a judge-led inquiry into the disaster, which is under pressure to act quickly.

The cause of the June 13th fire remains unclear, but safety experts point the finger at the building's new polyester-coated aluminum façade. While members of her party have suggested security issues contributed to her lack of engagement with the public, residents seemed unwilling to accept the explanation. He said that 24 people were being treated in hospitals, including 12 in critical care.

The aluminium cladding, called Reynobond, was made by USA company Arconic and had a polyethylene core, which the reports said was slightly cheaper than fire-resistant models by the same manufacturer.

The cladding used on the exterior walls of the tower block was not graded fire-resistant.

"Sadly, it is expected that the total will rise and it is not expected that any survivors will be found", he said.

Experts say the cladding and the insulation it contained seems to have spread the flames quickly along the exterior of the building, overwhelming safety devices like fire doors.

The visit can be seen as a response to the anger of residents from the west London neighborhood because May had visited the scene of the fire without meeting victims.

May met police and firefighters at the West London site on Thursday, to receive a briefing from the emergency services.
