Perth - Kuala Lumpur AirAsia X flight turns back due to technical issues

The pilot of a stricken AirAsia X plane told passengers to "say a prayer" after a suspected engine failure forced the A330 to return to Perth yesterday.

WA marine rescue services were put on alert after an Air Asia flight experienced a "technical issue" mid-flight and was forced to turn back to Perth airport this morning.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai when asked to comment said it was a normal procedure for a flight to turn back due to technical issue.

A Perth Airport spokesman said the issue was related to an engine.

Passengers reported hearing a loud explosion and then the plane began shaking violently. One passenger described the plane as shaking like a badly loaded washing machine. We could see the engine out the window which was really shaken on the wing, ABC quoted him saying. The A330 is created to operate even if one of its Rolls Royce engines fails.

One person posted a video of the plane shaking on Instagram, where the user @maesaya wrote, "I thought I might die".

No one was injured during the incident, though it seemed some passengers were struggling after getting off the plane.

The 359 passengers aboard flight D7237 departed Perth, Australia just before 7 a.m. local time, an AirAsia X Berhad spokesperson confirmed in a statement to the Daily News.

With terrified passengers in the brace position, the aircraft landed safely at 10am, three hours after it had left. Stevens said the pilot shook hands with all the passengers after it was all over and the whole plane erupted with applause once they were safely on the ground.

"The safety of our guests are our utmost priority", AirAsia said.
