Portugal and Mexico draw 2-2 in Confederations Cup

MOSCOW – A late header from Hector Moreno produced a 2-2 draw for CONCACAF Gold Cup champion Mexico against Euro 2016 champion Portugal in the FIFA Confederations Cup on Sunday.

Portugal's next game in the Confederations Cup is against hosts Russian Federation on Wednesday before the European champions conclude Group A against New Zealand on Saturday. Portugal thought they had taken the lead just after 20 minutes when Pepe had the ball in the net after pouncing on a Ronaldo volley that had hit the bar, but it was ruled out for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Mexico's Javier Hernandez celebrates after scoring his side's first goal during the Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match between Portugal and Mexico, at the Kazan Arena, Russia, Sunday, June 18, 2017.

Raphael Guerreiro miskicked a cross into the box, allowing Carlos Vela to play the ball back in for Hernandez to score.

Mexico head into Sunday's clash having drawn 1-1 with the United States of America in their latest World Cup qualifier, although prior to that they earned comfortable victories over Honduras in a qualifying game and Ireland in a friendly, winning 3-0 and 3-1 respectively.

The score was 1-1 at half-time, as Javier Hernandez responded from close range after Ricardo Quaresma had opened the scoring, but the highlight of the first half was the pass from Cristiano Ronaldo that set his long-time worldwide teammate up.

"If we apply it to perfection we have a very good chance of beating Portugal". With this draw, Portugal and Mexico are in second and third place, respectively, in Group A with one point each. "It was a great result for Mexican football".

After a cagey opening in front of over 34,000 fans in Kazan, the game sprang to life.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos said it was not the performance he expected from his team.
