Refunds now available for Unauthorized Amazon in-app purchases

Amazon is refunding up to $70M in-app purchases made by kids

"This case demonstrates what should be a bedrock principle for all companies-you must get customers' consent before you charge them", said Thomas Pahl, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

The Federal Trade Commission says emails have gone out to eligible consumers. Consumers have until May 28, 2018 to submit a request for a refund. Amazon argued that a small hyperlink that simply said "In-App Purchasing" was sufficient to alert consumers that they would be billed for in-app charges.

What we're talking about is an FTC lawsuit against Amazon that was recently settled.

More than $70 million in charges incurred between November 2011 and May 2016 may be eligible for refunds, the FTC says.

It's just over a year since a federal judge ruled that Amazon was liable for the unauthorized in-app purchases made by children. The retail giant didn't require a password for in-app purchases, which allowed children to spend hundreds of dollars playing "free" games by buying virtual goods like coins, stars and pet food without their parents' permission. In June 2016, the FTC used the defendants' sales records to mail full refunds to almost 200,000 people who bought the products online.

Then again, there is a set deadline for submissions of the refund request. The company may contact you for additional information after you file the request. Other big companies, such as Google and Apple, have also been confronted with similar complaints.

If you've been waiting patiently for a refund from Amazon for in-app purchases your kids made without your permission, your time has come.

Meanwhile, Amazon is now a proud member of the exclusive Wall Street group of companies that have shares valued at $1,000.
