Ronaldo scores, Portugal eases past New Zealand 4-0

All Whites deserved to score: Santos

Participants in the 2017 Confederations Cup are hosts Russian Federation, 2014 FIFA World Cup Champions Germany, 2015 Copa America Champions Chile, 2015 AFC Asian Cup Champion Australia, 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup winners Mexico, 2016 UEFA Euro Cup champs Portugal, OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) Nations Cup victors New Zealand and 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Champion Cameroon.

Forward Artyom Dzyuba's absence left Cherchesov relying heavily on Fyodor Smolov, who showed touches of class but missed a good chance against Portugal.

The Euro 2016 champions took the lead on 33 minutes through a penalty from their captain, his 75th global goal, before Manchester City-bound midfielder Bernardo Silva knocked in a second from close-range only to pick up an ankle injury which saw him substituted at the break.

The world No.8 side were a class above the hard-working Kiwis, nailing two goals in each quarter in an emphatic display which leaves them top of Group A ahead of Mexico.

Mexico booked a berth in the semifinals with the win, while Russian Federation was eliminated after finishing third in Group A with three points, followed by New Zealand at the bottom with zero.

Manchester City attacker Bernardo Silva has revealed that "everything is fine with his ankle" after picking up an injury during Portugal's Confederations Cup clash with New Zealand on Saturday night.

Andre Silva dribbled deep into the New Zealand penalty area to score with a rising shot in the 80th and Nani drilled in a fourth goal for Portugal during stoppage time.

After Nestor Araujo cancelled out Alexander Samedov's opening goal for the hosts in the first half, Hirving Lozano headed home Mexico's victor early in the second half to ensure the CONCACAF champions advanced as runners-up behind Group A winners Portugal.

- Cristiano Ronaldo has scored twice in this year's tournament - no other player has scored more often.

"Overall, there were some really positive signs in the game", he said.

But the Portugal captain made no mistake after Danilo was wrestled to the ground in the area by a combination of Tom Doyle and Tommy Smith following a corner.

Bernardo Silva struck three minutes later, but New Zealand nearly pulled a goal back on the hour when Tom Doyle's ball across the face of goal saw Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio block from Wood.

"At 2-0 we could have kept the scoreline respectable, but we didn't", he said.

Marinovic made impressive saves to deny Ronaldo, Andre Silva and Nani, but was powerless to stop Andre Silva or Nani late in the game.

The All Whites nearly had the final say, with Michael Boxall's shot from four yards blocked on the Portuguese line, before Nani crunching 90th minute strike.

New Zealand's next competitive game will be in more familiar surroundings against an opponent they ought to beat - the Solomon Islands in a two-legged Oceania final as part of World Cup qualifying.

Andre Silva, profiting from a Ricardo Quaresma assist made it 3-0 in the 80th minute when he finished his attractive individual effort with a superb strike from inside the box.

Igor Smolnikov had Russia's best chance to level, smashing over from close range, but the hosts could not produce a comeback and will not participate in the semi-finals, with Mexico progressing alongside Portugal from Group A.
