S. Koreans march to protest US missile defence system

President Moon Jae-in conducts an interview with “CBS This Morning” on the Blue House grounds on Tuesday

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday observed the test-firing of a new midrange missile being developed to counter North Korean threats, saying Seoul must be able to militarily "dominate" the North for future engagement to work.

Thousands of protesters marched near the U.S. Embassy in Seoul on Saturday to denounce U.S. President Donald Trump's blatant disrespect for South Korean sovereignty and its largely unilateral decision to deploy a controversial U.S. missile shield capable of spying on China.

U.S. Forces Korea Commander Vincent Brooks, said in November past year that the THAAD battery will be deployed here within eight to 10 months.

Two Thaad interceptor launchers and the system's radar have already been deployed here, but Moon earlier said the original agreement with the United States was to deploy one launcher in 2017 and an additional five in 2018.

South Korea's government froze the installation of the extra launchers earlier this month, pending an environmental assessment.

The late night curfew has been in place since 1968, when a group of 31 North Korean commandos infiltrated Seoul on a mission to assassinate then South Korean leader Park Chung-hee.

Around 4,000 people participated in the demonstration, the largest since South Korea and the United States took the decision to deploy the system, known as Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD.

The missile defense system has previously been deployed in Guam and Hawaii as a measure against potential attacks from North Korea.

Meanwhile, North Korea's Ambassador to India reached out to the USA on behalf of the Kim Jong-un regime with an offer of a moratorium on North Korean nuclear and missile tests.

In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Moon said only one THAAD launcher was scheduled to be deployed in 2017 here under an agreement with the US, and the remaining five next year.

Tokyo's preference of Aegis Ashore over THAAD for defense against North Korean missiles comes down to cost-effectiveness.

.

Japan's defense ministry has ruled out the deployment of a U.S.

Asahi said South Korea avoided giving a clear response.

The US interviewer also said, "President Moon believes he is going to get the green light from President Trump to have these bilateral talks with North Korea, to begin this inter-Korean dialogue". South Korea also operates Aegis-equipped destroyers.
