San Fernando Valley Congressman Proposes Impeachment of Trump, Alleging Obstruction of Justice

There have been rumblings about impeaching President Donald Trump ever since a group of Democratic leaders, including civil rights icon John Lewis, sat out his inauguration back in January.

Sherman said that given GOP control he knows an Article of Impeachment would not pass the House any time soon, but is quoted in the Nation as saying, "But given the risk posed to the Republic, we should move things forward as quickly as possible". A majority of the House of Representatives must vote in favor of impeaching a president and then 67 senators must agree that the president is guilty.

Republicans thus far have been fearful of the president but can probably be expected to scuttle their support for him if his poll numbers continue to sink.

Even so, Sherman's actions will be impossible to ignore.

Sherman penned a letter to his House colleagues, suggesting he would seek to force a floor vote on the matter.

Sherman spokesman Shane Seaver said the congressman chose to circulate the resolution in part to gauge interest from other members.

That may not be an issue for Republicans who have so far been willing to accept the Trump administration's almost daily chaos in exchange for his John Hancock on their legislation.

Sherman's article claims that in order to hinder or terminate the criminal investigations, Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to cut short the Flynn investigation, and then fired Comey to relieve the pressure of the Russian Federation investigation.

A finding of "High Crimes and Misdemeanors" does not require the violation of any particular criminal statute.1 However, many Members will feel more comfortable if it is shown that President Trump violated a particular criminal statute. The next day, according to Comey's June 8 testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Trump met privately with Comey in the Oval Office after asking administration officials, including Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, to leave the room. Democrats outside of Congress - like Virginia gubernatorial candidate Tom Perriello and megadonor and potential California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer - have also voiced support for impeachment, despite having no legal say in the matter.

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley of Democrat, echoed Capuano and other leaders, telling those in the meeting, "There is a need for a family discussion before any issue of this magnitude is brought forward".

But Sherman is undeterred.

As former Chief-of-Staff to Joe Biden in the Senate, I do not use the "impeachment" word lightly.
