Schiff says firing Mueller would echo Watergate

Under Justice Department regulations created to ensure a measure of independence for the special counsel, Rosenstein may only fire Mueller for "good cause".

Substitute anchor Kristen Welker, who led the interview about the alleged discussions about firing Mueller, replied, "Obviously, the legitimacy of the special counsel would be up for debate".

Could the president get rid of the independent counsel leading the Russian Federation investigation?

The effort to muddy the waters surrounding the investigation is coming amid growing White House concern that the probe could detract from the president's agenda for months or years to come.

Mueller and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey worked closely for years in the George W. Bush administration, when Mueller was Federal Bureau of Investigation director and Comey was deputy attorney general. Mueller is widely respected by both Democrats and Republicans, but at the moment, the president is supposedly considering firing him!

But expressions of discontent with Mueller are bubbling up nonetheless.

Rosenstein's letter critical of Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email server investigation served as the Trump White House's first reasoning for firing Comey - though Trump later undercut that explanation by saying he fired Comey in hopes of ending the Russian Federation probe.

"What's he done to be fired", Graham said Monday.

"At the end of the day it's ill-advised even if the president could [fire Mueller]".

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mr Mueller, declined to comment on Mr Ruddy's remarks. He served two additional years beyond his 10-year term, to ensure stability during a transition period in President Obama's national security team.

But Chris Ruddy, the CEO of Newsmax and a friend of the President who attended meetings Monday at the White House, was the one who revealed that the issue was being discussed.

But Rosenstein made it very clear how that would go. Jeanne Shaheen. She asked about news reports suggesting that President Donald Trump was already thinking about "terminating" Robert Mueller from his position as special counsel.

Ruddy's comments come as others close to Trump have expressed doubt with Mueller as special counsel.

The targeting of Mueller's credibility among some of Trump's most prominent supporters began after Comey's testimony last week.

"I think he's weighing that option", Ruddy said in an interview Monday with Judy Woodruff of "PBS NewsHour". Kislyak, but Speaker Gingrich said there is doubt about that assertion. Ruddy agrees that the move would be a wrong move, but dismissed the investigation Mueller is overseeing. Rosenstein would be the one to fire Comey, which he repeatedly assured senators Tuesday he would not consider without "good cause".

As expectations mounted about the upcoming open hearing of attorney general Jeff Sessions on Capitol Hill, a friend of the president added a new twist to the Russian Federation controversy by suggesting Donald Trump might be considering dismissing the special counsel investigating it.

"It's a mistake to pretend that this is going to be some neutral investigation", he said. "I appointed him. I stand by it... and I am going to defend the integrity of that investigation", he said.

"Look, the president of the United States, as we all know, is a unitary executive".
