Scott Pelley leaves CBS Evening News; Anthony Mason new interim anchor

Per the report, Pelley is being moved permanently over to the network's newsmagazine 60 Minutes.

Then-anchor and Managing Editor of the CBS Evening News Scott Pelley hosts the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's 60th Anniversary Gala in November 2015 in NY. And Pelley continued to do as many as 20 pieces each season for 60 Minutes, a schedule that left him stretched rather thin. In the meantime, Anthony Mason will serve as interim-anchor for CBS Evening News. "So has his dedication to consequential reporting", added Jeff Fager, executive producer of 60 Minutes. Today, 60 MINUTES continues its dominance as the number-one news program, drawing an average of approximately 14 million viewers per week - nearly twice the audience of its nearest network news magazine competitor.

Pelley succeeded Katie Couric as anchor on June 5, 2011.

"CBS has been great to me for almost 30 years", Mr. Pelley said in a statement. He also has an office at "60 Minutes" in another building across the street. CBS didn't formally announce anything. Evening news ratings have been down while news junkies turn to prime-time cable newscasts.

CBS had hoped Pelley's hard-news credentials - he has won numerous rewards for his reporting including a record 33 Emmys - would help the broadcast catapult the competition. Upon hearing the news, people thought Scott Pelley was sacked. Pelley's Evening News, which remains in third in both measures, had the largest declines; 6 percent in viewers and 13 percent.

He has been with CBS News since he was a reporter in NY in 1989, before being named CBS News' Chief White House Correspondent in 1997. CBS News has not issued a statement regarding the rumors, but the network is expected to make a formal announcement on May 31.

Meanwhile, it is still chaos at CBS News, we're told. He's now on assignment and won't step into the interim anchor role immediately.

Pelley had ordered his assistant to clear out his offices on Tuesday after he clashed with CBS News President David Rhodes.
