SKorean president calls for NKorean Olympic participation

BIGBANG's Taeyang holds up a card showing him as an honorary ambassador for the 2018 Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics alongside Lee Hee-beom head of PyeongChang's organizing committee at a ceremony in Seoul

The South Korean authorities are discussing possible ways of co-hosting the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games with North Korea, newly appointed South Korea's Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Do Jong Hwan said Wednesday.

North Korea has won medals in previous Olympic games including last year's Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where the country took home seven medals, including two golds.

Moon has also pushed for both Koreas to host the 2030 World Cup, saying "if the neighbouring countries in north-east Asia, including North and South Korea, can host the World Cup together, it would help to create peace".

A North Korean taekwondo team will join South Korean athletes this weekend in a demonstration at the opening ceremony of the sport's world championships in Muju, South Korea.

Chang said, however, he will attend discussion on the issue at the IOC level, adding IOC President Thomas Bach will soon visit South Korea to attend the closing ceremony of the World Taekwondo Championships slated for Friday of next week.

It is not the first time proposals for North Korea to host competitions at the Games have been mooted, with the suggestion having been raised back in 2015.

Despite Moon's public statements that he wants to improve relations with North Korea, Pyongyang has ramped up missile testing and continued its aggressive rhetoric towards its southern neighbor and the US.

Currently, North Korea have not qualified any athletes for the Games, with pairs figure skating representing their only hope.

South Korea gained a berth in the women's ice hockey event alongside seven other teams, but North Korea did not make it.

The United States will send around 245 athletes to compete. The Games will be held on February 9-25, 2018.

The NHL failed to come to an agreement with the International Olympic Committee on sharing the revenue generated by hockey at the Olympics, as well as on the insurance for the league's players.
