Solution For WannaCry Virus: Finally A Microsoft Approved Patch For Windows XP

Microsoft includes Windows XP and Vista in June's Patch Tuesday updates

Microsoft this week issued a "highly unusual" software update for Windows XP - amongst other versions of the hugely-popular desktop operating system.

Microsoft is taking extra precautions in its June update following last month's WannaCry ransomware outbreak and recent threats by The Shadow Brokers to dump more Windows vulnerabilities and exploits this month as part of its new subscription. These security updates are being made available to all customers, including those using older versions of Windows.

"If Microsoft says that Windows 7 truly reaches end of life in [January] 2020, is it really going to cut off support, or will they release critical patches like they have done twice with Windows XP?" asked Brad Sams of Petri.com on Tuesday.

Security Advisory 4025685 details additional guidance for critical security updates "that are at heightened risk of exploitation due to past and threatened nation-state attacks and disclosures", according to Microsoft.

Based on Insider feedback, we have changed "Phone Update" to "Windows Update" under Settings Update & security.

Users of Windows 10 and Windows 8.1, which are now supported by Microsoft, need not worry about the latest patch as it will be updated automatically. He went on to urge users to adopt new Microsoft products, which are significantly more resistant to exploits, and not to expect regular security fixes in the future.

However, while Microsoft is once again patching these older operating systems, you shouldn't get used to this kind of special attention.

Microsoft has released its usual Patch Tuesday flood, and it's enormous. This is unprecedented, not only because Microsoft had long ago discontinued XP extended support, but also because Microsoft already pushed out security updates to XP last month. The company had previously said it would not fix these potential exploits as they only affected older, unsupported versions of Windows.

Microsoft therefore did the world a favour - and that's what it was, no matter how you look at it - by retrofitting the patch for XP and making the update available to everyone. Some, not able to finish the job in time and unwilling (or unable) to expose unpatched systems to possible attacks, pay princely sums to Microsoft for after-retirement custom support.

Some 7 percent of PCs are thought to still run XP despite it being three years out of date. In anofficial blog post, Adrienne Hall, General Manager, Cyber Defense Operations Center at Microsoft found that the three vulnerabilities in the Windows OS could prove to be detrimental for its users. "On one hand, it offers protections to those who may be unable to migrate off XP for whatever reason".
