Southampton report Liverpool 'for tapping up Van Dijk'

Manchester City will not continue with their interest in Southampton's Virgil van Dijk

Sources indicate Van Dijk has been impressed with manager Jurgen Klopp's personal involvement in Liverpool's effort to sign him.

According to The Sun, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has convinced the Liverpool owners Van Dijk is deserving of earning a weekly wage of nearly £200,000 (230,000 euros, $258,000) - which will make him their highest ever paid player.

Several bookmakers have suspended betting on the ex-Celtic man moving to Anfield in a move that would smash the club's transfer record.

The Virgil van Dijk transfer saga has taken another twist, with the Dutchman's club now looking to officially report would-be suitors Liverpool over what has been considered an illegal approach for the defender.

That record is held by David Luiz, who Chelsea sold to Paris Saint-Germain for £50 million in 2015.

As per the provided BBC link, Southampton want to hold onto the Netherlands defender and are ready to reject an official offer. Given their frailties at the back in recent years, the Dutch worldwide would provide an authoritative figure for Klopp for the upcoming season.

The Merseyside club are winning race to sign the much coveted centre-back who is set to become the world's most expensive defender this summer.

Though the move would appear costly, Gerrard has backed the Reds' move for Van Dijk and says he's flawless for the club.

There is no doubt this is the first blow in what could develop into a bitter battle between the two clubs, with Van Dijk and his desire to play Champions League football stuck in the middle.

The chance to work with Klopp is believed to have swung his decision, despite similar overtures from Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte.

However, he missed the second half of last season with an ankle injury.

Another report from the Guardian claims that Klopp is also keen on signing AS Roma's Mohamed Salah.
