Tech Council Including Apple, Amazon, Google Execs Visits White House Today

Despite having one of the most high-profile and demanding positions on President Donald Trump's team, he's managed to avoid the media nearly entirely.

It's the first meeting of the American Technology Council, which was created by an executive order Trump signed last month.

President Trump will meet today with the CEOs of nearly 20 tech companies, including Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Adobe, IBM, Intel, Microsoft and Qualcom.

Some of the Tech CEOs attending the meeting include Tim Cook of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), who outspokenly in criticized Trump's decision to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement to fight climate change and travel ban on immigrants. from several major Muslim countries.

Although Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg had joined other tech executives in a December meeting with Trump in NY, she will not be in attendance.

White House officials said the dispute had little impact and that they had to turn away tech leaders from Monday's event because of lack of space.

The White House said expected attendees include Apple CEO Tim Cook and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, who quit Trump's advisory council in February under mounting pressure, did also not attend.

Top White House aide - and presidential son-in-law - Jared Kushner is among the most powerful men in America, but few have heard him speak, until now. He said federal agencies operate 6,100 data centers, with some using systems that are decades old. They are expected to discuss different issues including shrinking the government, reducing federal employees, improving government services, and eliminating regulations among others.

The heads of Silicon Valley's largest companies are gathering at the White House today for the inaugural meeting of the new American Technology Council.

"Some liked the decision, some didn't like the decision, but they see a bigger relationship and they've been very happy with the level of dialogue that comes out of this White House, and with the president", the official said.

He recently announced that he would be taking a leave of absence from the company, following the results of multiple probes into Uber's work culture and the sudden death of his mother. Kushner, the son of a real estate magnate, has no experience in either technology or government, and is also shouldering the responsibility for running the president's Middle East peace initiative.
