Tributes planned for Georgia corrections officers killed on prison bus

The men escaped Tuesday morning during a prison transport.

The deceased security guards were Christopher Monica, a strapping 42-year-old man, and Curtis Billue, 58, an experienced and highly-regarded prison worker.

The search for two Georgia prison inmates who killed two guards and stole a pickup truck has expanded nationwide, Sills said.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills says in a brief email to The Associated Press that "many significant contributions" boosted the reward from $70,000.

Hours later, authorities converged on the small city of Madison, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) to the north, where they determined the fugitives had ransacked a house about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Since then, authorities say they have stolen at least two vehicles.

That's where the trail goes cold.

Sills said the Honda Civic they carjacked at the killing scene was hidden in some woods, and they walked to the quarry from there.

The escapees may be driving a white 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty truck, Georgia tag #BCX5372, with left and right side chrome tool boxes.

A joint news conference was held in Madison on the escaped inmates who killed two officers at noon Thursday.

Meanwhile, Sills appealed for the public to help locate the truck and the fugitives, and to call 911 immediately if they spot them. They are armed with 9 mm pistols that were taken from these correctional officers.

The prisoners breached a protective gate on the bus to reach the officers at the front of the bus, before disarming and killing them both, the sheriff's office said. Sills said Dubose also has "ghost" tattooed on his right forefinger and "face" on his right pinky finger - signs of membership in the Ghost Face Gangsters.

Rowe had been serving a life sentence since 2002 over convictions including robbery and aggravated assault.

The FBI said these men are armed and unsafe and if you think you see them, call 911 immediately.

The escaped inmates left the auto and fled on foot in the area.

"Where they have gone from there I don't know", Sill said.

Since their daring escape, and after abandoning the other prisoners in the bus, Rowe and Dubose have vanished, and officials say they have few leads as to their whereabouts. Local law enforcement officers engaged in the effort include the Baldwin, Greene, Henry and Jasper Counties Sheriffs' Offices and the Eatonton Police Department.

The reward for information leading to the arrests of Rowe, 43, and Dubose, 24, continued to grow.
