Trump denies seeking Comey 'loyalty,' dodges tapes question

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, responding to Trump's statement last week that he would "100 percent" speak under oath about the Comey affair, said he would like the president to testify in public before the Senate.

Earlier this week Mr Comey gave evidence before a US Senate hearing about Mr Trump and his alleged links with Russian Federation.

Meanwhile, on Friday, the House intelligence committee also asked the White House counsel whether there are any tape recordings or memos of Comey's conversations with Trump.

Comey testified Thursday that Trump asked him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn and implied Trump may have become the subject of investigation himself for interfering in the FBI's work.

Comey said he believed Trump fired him because of the Russian Federation investigation, and Trump himself cited "this Russian Federation thing" as a motivating factor for his decision to sack Comey during an interview with broadcaster NBC that aired last month.

Trump, when asked about the possibility of those tapes during a press conference on Friday afternoon, would not rule out his earlier claim that his conversations with Comey may have been recorded.

"That didn't make sense to me for a whole bunch of reasons, including the time and all the water that had gone under the bridge since those hard decisions that had to be made", Comey said.

"I will tell you I didn't say that", Trump said at a conference in the White House Rose Garden.

Trump concluded the morning tweets with an attack on Democrats, calling them "obstructionists".

Mr Trump's personal lawyer Marc Kasowitz attacked Comey after his testimony for leaking what he called "privileged communications" to the media.

Trump subsequently gave a non-answer to questions about possible tapes of his conversations with the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director. Comey said he instructed his friend, a Columbia law professor, to give the memos to The New York Times. It is likely that he will answer questions about the committee's investigation of Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election. "And there'd be nothing wrong with it if I did say that, according to everybody that I read today, but I did not say that".

The FBI investigation continues, as do congressional inquiries, and sufficient questions were raised for the Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor with wide-ranging powers of inquiry - work that is only recently underway. "I'm not going to say, "I want you to pledge allegiance".

"I felt compelled to document my first conversation with the president-elect in a memo", Comey said in his opening statement to the committee.
