Trump Intends to Nominate Jessica Rosenworcel for Return to FCC

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai congratulated Rosenworcel on her impending nomination following the White House's announcement.

Obama had nominated Rosenworcel, a Democrat, to another Federal Communications Commission term at the beginning of January, one day after she finished her extended first term and two weeks before Trump took office. Two seats are presently open on the panel, one for each party, and it is widely rumored that FCC General Counsel BRENDAN CARR will be nominated for the open Republican slot to maintain the G.O.P.'s majority. Commissioner Rosenworcel is supremely qualified for another FCC term, having demonstrated her public service credentials and full command of telecommunications issues during her Commission tenure. Rosenworcel voted in favor of the net neutrality rules in 2015. It is not clear if Clyburn plans to stay on the commission. Her departure would leave the FCC without the quorum necessary to conduct major business (though some have quoted agency analysts saying Chairman Pai could use "obscure procedural tactics" to conduct business). Clyburn's term expires at the end of June.

Trump announced his intention to nominate Rosenworcel late Tuesday, and Pai was quick to voice his support for the move. A name that has been mentioned as a candidate is Brendan Carr, who is now the FCC's general counsel. Republicans in the Senate dragged out her confirmation in an effort to force the early resignation of FCC chair Tom Wheeler.

President Trump intends to nominate Jessica Rosenworcel for a new term on the FCC, paving her way for her return to the commission after her tenure lapsed at the end of past year. "She has a distinguished record of public service, including the four-and-a-half years we worked together at this agency, and I look forward to working with her once again to advance the public interest". "We share Jessica's passion for promoting policies that close the digital divide and ensure that all Americans, especially students, have access to the many benefits that the internet offers".

"Sen. [John] Thune is pleased to see Jessica Rosenworcel's nomination moving forward", said a spokesman for the Senate Commerce Committee.

"This appointment rights a wrong, because she deserved confirmation previous year, and should have been sitting on the commission all along". His committee eventually confirmed Rosenworcel, but never made it to the Senate floor for a chamber-wide vote. "USTelecom and its members will consider it a great privilege to continue to work with her on these important issues, and we encourage the Senate to confirm her nomination swiftly".
